2010 has been very dry for Ontario whitewater paddlers with two major festivals being cancelled this year.
The first festival to be cancelled this year was M.A.C.K. Fest (Marmora Area Canoe and Kayak Festival) in the spring and followed by Gull Fest over the Canada Day long weekend.
Organizers of Gull Fest have teamed up with Whitewater Ontario and negotiated a scheduled release of 18cms which is around 8.3 on the gauge for Sunday July 25th.
What does that mean exactly?
On a low water year like this one water in the reservoirs becomes a very valuable asset to all the stake holders involved.
Who are the stake holders?
Recreational whitewater paddlers like you and I, training slalom boaters, fisher men, cottagers, Trent canal operators, power boaters and the list goes on.
Unfortunately whitewater paddlers are not the only people who need the water to have fun.
The scheduled release that has been negotiated comes at a cost not just to all the stake holders but to the paddlers coming out to participate in the event.
Considering all of the above believe it or not that cost is only $10 per person.
Registration will be at the event from 9:00am to 10:00am and there will be a free paddle from 9:00am to 11:30am.
Rodeo starts at 1:00pm sharp.
Organizers are also asking for help so if you don't feel like paddling the whole day why not volunteer.
I know for paddling piece of mind and to show my support for the whitewater community I will be attending and will probably bring my non-paddling family members along to see the joy whitewater paddling brings to me and so many other people.
Will you?
