VIDEO: Unusual Spring Kayaking in Canada

Okay, so there's no doubt that it has been a very funky spring in Canada...hot, sunny, dry—all good things for most winter-weary Canucks, but not so great for flood-thirsty kayakers.

If you've spent the last month pining over how water levels in most rivers are already where they'd typically be in mid-summer, you need to reflect on all the good boating that was had this spring. Certainly can't complain about the sunshine!

Check out this video from French paddler Mathieu Coldebella, who obviously had a pretty wicked spring in Canada.

Take a Moment: Save B.C.'s Klinaklini River

The B.C. government's recent announcement that they planned to go ahead with the Site C dam on the Peace River came with a silver lining for river conservationists: protection for other watersheds in the province in the form of the new Two Rivers Policy, which will prohibit future development of large scale hydroelectric storage dam projects on all river systems in B.C.

Lest champions of B.C.'s beleaguered rivers get too excited, however, the policy does permit large-scale, run-of-river hydro projects. Hot on the heels of the Site C victory, it is just such a project that now threatens the coastal Klinaklini River in Knight Inlet.

At nearly 200 kilometres long and bordering the Great Bear Rainforest, the Klinaklini drainage currently encompasses some of least fragmented habitat on the Canadian West Coast. Two junior energy coroporations with no hydropower experience have proposed to develop the largest private Run-of-River generating facility in BC’s history on the Klinaklini, forever fracturing this wilderness.

Read on to find out how just 10 minutes of your time can save the Klinaklini.

B.C.'s Most Endangered Rivers 2010

bc_endangered_river
British Columbia’s Kettle River and the Sacred Headwaters—source of three of B.C.'s largest rivers—are tied atop the Outdoor Recreation Council’s list of the province’s top-10 most endangered rivers, released yesterday.

The report, which names nine other rivers across the province facing threats as diverse as excessive water extraction, power production, urbanization, industrial development, pollution and high water temperatures, calls for a watershed management plan that would put the brakes on “seemingly unbridled development now taking place in the upper watershed.”
