First Look—Blackfly Canoe
Blackfly Canoes' first production model is a winning freestyle open boat design available now. Designed specifically for international freestyle competition by 2009 World Freestyle OC1 Champion Jeremy Laucks.
One of the first production boats to be designed to meet the new ICF (International Canoe Federation) regulations for OC1, the Blackfly targets serious freestyle open boaters.
The Blackfly was originally based on a shortened Esquif Spanishfly. First conceived in 2006, Laucks perfected the design for the 2009 World Championships, where he took first place in a prototype. Seeing a niche market that none of the major boat companies were targeting, Laucks built a mold of his proven design and Blackfly Canoes was born in 2009.
Laucks describes the Blackfly as "stable enough to be easy to paddle, but still able to be edged; slicy enough to throw around, but still has enough volume to be retentive."
Standard equipment includes: full length foam saddle and bulkhead, adjustable footpegs, ash thwarts and Gaia Standard floatbags. The Blackfly is currently available in rotomolded plastic, with a composite version to follow.
