New SPOT Messenger

The next-generation SPOT Messenger is 30% smaller and lighter than the original, with enhanced features.

Newly released from Globalstar, the SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger is an update to the popular SPOT Satellite Personal Tracker.

The SPOT is a GPS-enabled satellite beacon that allows you to transmit information about your status and location to friends and family and rescue authorities from anywhere in the world. The Tracker, released a few years ago, has already aided in 450 rescues.

The big change is the size. The SPOT is now easier to slip into a PFD pocket and carry around. The new SPOT measures 3.7 x 2.6 x 1 inches (9.4 x 6.6 x 2.5 cm) and weighs 5.2 ounces (147 g).

The other big change is the feature of custom messaging. With the old SPOT you could tell people that you were OK, that you needed assistance, or that you were in deep doo doo and please send in the cavalry.

The obvious downside to this was lack of nuance. While it's still not as useful as a sat. phone in that regard, the new SPOT's custom messaging button provides one more level of communication by allowing you to send a pre-programmed message.

Equipped with two notification LEDs and six function buttons, the new SPOT Satellite GPS Messenges transmits activated messages based on varying levels of need:

  • SOS/9-1-1 Alert notifies an emergency rescue coordination center of your GPS location
  • OK/Check in lets contacts know where you are and that you’re okay
  • Track Progress sends and saves your location and allows contacts to track your progress in real-time using Google Maps™
  • Help notifies your contacts or SPOT Assist professional services of your GPS location and need for assistance
  • Custom Message button sends a pre-programmed message to your personal contacts

Wait a few more years and I'll bet we'll see a Blackberry-style satellite messenger that supports one-way text messaging, but until then this is some good peace of mind for emergencies and semi-emergencies outside of cell-phone range.

The SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger is available through major electronics and specialty outdoor retailers at a suggested retail price of $100 US or $170 Cdn, which includes a one-year subscription to the messenging service.
