Did Bill Mason Article Miss the Mark?

RPv12i1-DE_46In the Spring 2010 issue of Rapid, our final page features an op-editorial by former Canoeroots editor Ian Merringer titled "Accidentally Famous?"

In it, Merringer notes iconic Canadian canoeist, environmentalist and artist Bill Mason's recent induction into the International Whitewater Hall of Fame (IWHOF) and poses the intentionally controversial question: Does he belong there?

The only controversy so far is that we dared ask the question. Merringer's article has generated a wave of pro-Mason sentiments like this one:
"I didn’t really understand your piece about Bill Mason. Bill was unique and a true whitewater pioneer... He learned how to run whitewater at Petawawa University and the river was his teacher. Hell, no wonder he “swam a lot.” There was no other way to figure out the manoeuvres and limits but to get in there and try them or swim."
